The destination started to become popular because of a very simple reason: for the road and railway construction already at the end of the 19th century. As it simply became accessible to a wide range of tourists.

The village represents the real picture of Switzerland by the chalet style woody houses and plenty of the cosy restaurants. We should not forget about the mountain cottages, which are highly recommended for tasting delicious local dishes in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

It is an idyllic place for nature lovers and active people who are fond of hiking, climbing and biking in the summertime, as well as enjoying the best activities in the winter. Thanks to its mountainscape region, Grindelwald offers plenty of winter activities, especially skiing.

The highlight that is offered by this amazing region is the cable car journey to the Jungfraujoch through the Eiger, known as the most famous railway trip in the world.

The first cableway in the Swiss Alps was built in Grindelwald in 1908. Later in 1912, it reached to Jungfraujoch Mountain – the Top of Europe.

Nowadays Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station throughout Europe. Also, the UNESCO has listed it as “World Heritage Site”, where permanent snow and ice can be found.

Besides the beautiful and peaceful scenery, Grindelwald ski resort is well-known for its slopes of all experience levels, such activities like sledding, snowshoeing, snowboarding, as well as other activities for people, who do not like skiing.

The area is also equipped with ski schools for the beginners and children at the sunny Bodmi Nursery slopes.

Grindelwald’s ski resort is part of the ski area of Jungfrau Region, which also contains the Lauterbrunnen, Murren and Wengen resorts. Furthermore, you can easily reach the Wengen ski resort directly from Grindelwald by the linked ski lift.

Besides the various activities in Grindelwald, you can find different kinds of cultural and sporting events. For example, the World Snow Festival started in 1983 and has grown to one of the fascinating events not only in Grindelwald but also throughout Switzerland. Each January the glacier village hosts the festival, where the participants try to impress the jury as well as visitors with their huge snowy sculptures. The Eiger Bike Challenge takes place during August, and it is one of the most outstanding five bike events of Switzerland.
