The Black Forest is a huge forest in the mountainous region in the state of Baden Württemberg. Its name comes from the massive bulk of pine trees that grow in the area. The Roman soldiers were the first to use the name “Black Forest” (German Schwarzwald) due to the shadows that the enormous trees cast in the area. As they passed through Germany, they were met by a path obscured by gloomy forest with a powerful, musky aroma. Thus, they called the region “Silva Nigra,” literally meaning “the pitch black, musky forest” in Latin.
At that time people avoided entering the Black Forest, with its overbearing feel and sinister appearance. It is this same forest which was the inspiration for numerous Grimm Brothers stories. For example, Hansel and Gretel, who discovered the wicked witch’s house in the woods. However, nowadays, the Black Forest is listed among the favorite tourist destinations, shrouded in magic and mystery.
You’ll begin your private trip from any convenient location in Zurich.
