The City of Bern hosts a yearly festival called Zibelemärit, where onions and garlic are the main attractions. The festival takes place on the fourth Monday of every November and is a traditional folk festival that showcases around 50 tons of onions and garlic brought in by farmers from the region.
Visitors can expect to see colourful market stalls, braids of onions and garlic, and enjoy delicious mulled wine. The festival officially opens at 6 a.m., but many locals start strolling around the streets earlier to check out the wares and bargain with vendors. Food lovers will find a range of onion dishes, such as onion tarts, onion soup, sausage with onions, and onion pizza. Visitors can also warm themselves up with a cup of mulled wine in the wintry weather.
